Student Life
Average class size	An optimal class size fosters strong student/teacher relationships and allows teachers to appropriately individualize instruction. Class size at McDonogh is determined by subject matter and grade level, averaging between 15 and 20 students per class. The Upper School's wide curriculum can mean even smaller classes -- as few as five students in some advanced electives.
College preparatory program	McDonogh students are appropriately challenged at all grade levels. By the time they enter the Upper School, they are well equipped to push for the highest level of achievement. Each year, McDonogh offers more than a dozen Advanced Placement courses. Students may also select honors courses in most levels of English, foreign language, history, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Teachers	Dedicated, creative, talented teachers have always been a hallmark of the McDonogh experience. More than 70 percent of the faculty hold advanced degrees in their fields, and the average number of years of teaching experience is 15. A quarter of the faculty and staff live on campus and are involved in campus life.
Computers	Computers play an ever-increasing role in education at McDonogh, and each year appropriate funds are allocated to update our technology across campus. The computer program in the Lower School provides all students with an opportunity to learn how to use the computer as an effective tool for research, exploration, communication, and creative expression. The Middle School Technology Center, the Foster Technology Center in the Upper School, a campus-wide network, and Internet access expand the parameters of student learning and teacher instruction in all grades.
College	McDonogh students are recruited by the most prestigious colleges and universities in the US, and each year we have students accepted by Ivy League and other top institutions. However, the goal of McDonogh college counselors is not simply to encourage students to attend the "best colleges," but to help students determine which colleges are right for individual interests, personality, and goals. Coeducation	McDonogh has always sought to prepare students for lives of achievement in the world. McDonogh admitted its first female students in 1975 because we recognized that our students must succeed in a diverse world where men and women work side by side in every field of endeavor. A supportive, egalitarian, coeducational environment teaches young people to be active, productive members of such a society.
Diversity	Because of our size and McDonogh's long commitment to diversity, our student body represents a wide range of racial, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic, and geographic backgrounds. Twenty percent of our student population is made up of students of color, and students hail from Baltimore City and five surrounding counties. Five-day boarding and an international exchange program allow students to come from out of state and around the world.
Typical McDonogh student	There is no McDonogh "type." We're proud of the diversity and range of talents of our students. What McDonogh students have in common is a commitment to making the most of what McDonogh has to offer and to contributing to campus life.
School Day	We offer instruction for all grades from 8:20 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday-Thursday and 8:20 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. on Friday. The length of the school day allows us to offer a full schedule that will keep students interested and excited -- a full menu of "the basics" as well as plenty of free play and social time, and instruction in art, music, drama, physical education, and a foreign language.
After-school care	For some Lower School students, the McDonogh campus is home until late afternoon each day. These children are enrolled in the AfterCare Program, which operates Monday through Thursday when school is in session from 3:45 to 6:00 p.m. and Friday from 2:45 to 5 p.m. The AfterCare experience is a special one. Well-supervised in this nurturing environment, the children are encouraged to practice kindness, sharing, and consideration for others while they have fun. Parents must register their children for AfterCare at least 48 hours before joining the program. Here is the fee schedule: Registration fee: $40 Full-time (Monday-Friday): $70/week Part-time (four or fewer days each week): $18/day M-Th; $20/day Fri. Drop-in (occasional): $25/day M-Th; $30/day Fri. Late pick-up fee: $25 for each quarter hour or any part thereof after 6 p.m.
Dress Code	McDonogh's dress code reflects our belief that children should dress appropriately for the task of learning and in a way that eliminates competitiveness. Lower and middle school students wear polo shirts and khaki pants and skirts. Upper school students wear oxford shirts and khaki pants and skorts.
Do students leave their classroom buildings during the day?	Most Lower School classes are offered in one building. Even the youngest students have opportunities to use other campus facilities, but Lower School students are always accompanied by a teacher while traveling on the campus. With increasing self-reliance comes freedom and responsibility. Fifth graders find their own way between classes and buildings. By Upper School, students move freely around campus and can choose where to spend their free periods.
Lunch	Lunch is included in tuition, so families never have to pack a lunch, purchase a meal card, or send lunch money for McDonogh students. Most children find plenty of appealing, nutritious choices among the dining hall's selection of hot entrees, salad bar, and sandwich stations. Children with special dietary requirements or food allergies may bring their lunches. The dining hall offers breakfast and dinner for boarding students only.
Boarding program	We offer five-day Upper School boarding Monday through Friday. Most of our boarders live within commuting distance of our campus and use boarding as an opportunity to prepare for college life. Out-of-state and international students boarding at McDonogh spend weekends with local host families.
