McDonogh is proud to offer four programs designed to help international students improve their language skills and experience American culture. Mornings of serious learning will be followed by serious fun. Our programs combine excellent English language instruction and cultural immersion with wonderful amenities outside the classrooms. Our faculty is committed to helping international students reach new levels of understanding and mastery. At the same time, they want students to feel comfortable, safe, and happy. Their goal is to create a family among participants.
In the evenings, students will venture to Baltimore’s festive Inner Harbor, restaurants, shopping malls, and other local attractions. The program also includes weekend travel to places such as New York and Washington D.C.
While on campus, students will live in McDonogh dorms. Home to McDonogh students during the school year, Rollins Hall and Jane Bay are comfortable, secure resident halls for American Immersion students in the summer.
Ages: Boys and girls 10 to 16
ESOL at McDonogh is a blend of academics, cultural interactions, language instruction, travel experiences, summer activities, and total American culture and English language immersion. Directed by John Wood, Ph.D. and taught by our team of language specialists, the program will emphasize the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Classes will be small enough to offer consistent individual attention. The student’s level in each area will be determined by a placement exam given at the beginning of the program. Each participant will receive grades and a written progress report, which will also be sent to parents.
Ages: Boys and girls 10 to 16
The Adventure Program will allow students to improve their English and their understanding of American life through participation in a variety of leisure activities. Students will immerse themselves in McDonogh’s summer programs, where they can choose from sailing, rock climbing, swimming, tennis, horseback riding, team sports, science classes, filmmaking, and much more.
Ages: Boys and girls 13 to 17
This seminar-style program will help students improve their English while investigating advanced chemistry topics which are not typically addressed in honors and AP Chemistry courses, such as medicines, polymers, and neurotransmitters, to name a few. Participants will work side-by-side with American students on projects and experiments in the classroom and lab. They will also spend time outdoors collecting and analyzing data on McDonogh’s environmentally diverse campus.
Ages: Boys and girls 15 to 17
This program is geared to educate students for the SAT and TOEFL tests, which many U.S. colleges and universities require for admittance. The SAT section will introduce students to a wide variety of test-taking techniques, time management strategies, and critical reading methods that are central to mastering the test. The TOEFL section will help students achieve proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, the four skills measured by the most widely accepted English-language test in the world.
