Campus Master Plan Guiding Principles

The following eight principles are guiding the Campus Master Plan:

1. The history, legacy, and tradition of McDonogh School should be maintained and celebrated in all new and renovated space.

2. All of our spaces should support the development of transformative relationships between students and adults.
Teaching and learning in the context of strong relationships is at the heart of what we do as a school. Therefore, every full-time teacher should “own” a classroom. These classrooms should be personal and inviting. This philosophy also extends to social spaces. Downtime spaces for students should be oriented around small nooks rather than large lounges.

3. Upper School academic departments should be consolidated to increase collaboration.
We believe that departmental unity and identity are increased when classrooms, labs, and studios are organized together. We also believe that learning is enhanced when teachers are able to collaborate with colleagues outside of their academic discipline.

4. The St. John Student Center should be more than a dining hall.
The space should blend K-12, multipurpose spaces with access to food in order to create a productive “hum.”

5. Improving the dining experience is at the center of the project.
We want to create a space that promotes the development of strong relationships in the context of a quality meal. In order to achieve this objective, we need to pay careful attention to acoustics, furniture, nutrition, sustainability, and the efficiency of the serving system. The main dining hall should be large enough to provide each division with schedule autonomy and to accommodate the entire Middle School and Upper School during special lunches.

6. Access to the core of campus should be limited to pedestrian traffic.
The relocation of parking, enhancements to existing roads, and establishment of new campus greens and quads should create a pedestrian center that is free of vehicular traffic.

7. The meaningful integration of sustainable design and construction is essential.

8. The McDonogh campus should breathe.
The campus should honor and celebrate our land.
