The Naylor Building—the science, technology, engineering, and math building for Upper School—will replace the old, cramped science labs and math classrooms currently located in Allan Building. Its facilities will allow for the teaching of the best possible high school science and math curricula. The Naylor Building will also increase McDonogh’s presence in engineering and technology.
Features: 30,000 sq. feet. Outside will have classic, Georgian architecture with transitional elements. Large foyer space will make a strong statement about science, math, engineering, and technology. The building will be three stories facing Woods Rd. and two stories facing the campus green. The south side will be science; the north will be math.
In math classrooms, tables will replace desks so students can spread out. The entire perimeter will include whiteboards for active learning and collective-problem solving. Rooms will be 650 sq. ft., big enough to hold 24 students but intended for 14-16 per class.
Science labs will be 1,000 to 1,100 square feet, customized for each discipline. A greenhouse on third floor, southern end, full of light, will connect with two bio labs. Every two labs will share 400 sq. foot prep rooms.
