No one ever forgets his or her first drive up the main drive. The natural beauty and open space are breathtaking, particularly in contrast to the surrounding suburban sprawl. Shell Road is truly one of the greatest gifts of the campus. It is a front door to cherish.
These days, most people enter campus via the back door, Woods Road. It provides access to the majority of campus parking, it is the recommended route for those attending school events, and it leads to the student drop-off and pick-up areas for buses and cars.
The reconfigured Woods Road area will relocate parking, feature attractive entrances to the St. John Student Center and the Naylor Building, and, with designated green spaces, significantly increases the beauty of the Woods Road back door. A traffic light will be installed at Woods Road for safety.
The end result will be a new axis for the back of campus that is welcoming, practical, and efficient for traffic. However you enter the McDonogh campus, you experience the beauty of the place.
The heat for McDonogh buildings comes from a 1937 Titusville boiler, the oldest in the state of Maryland. The inefficient boiler will be replaced by a new utility plant. Initially powered by natural gas, the new system will be fitted for conversion to greener technologies as they become available.
The plant will be located behind the current bus maintenance shop on Woods Road.
Today’s Woods Road vistas include great expanses of asphalt, which will be replaced by new buildings and green spaces. Parking lots will be relocated near the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, providing better access to the fields and improved traffic flow. There will be a net gain of 50 parking places.
