Young Actors Theatre

Established in 1995, the very popular YAT offers quality instruction in all aspects of drama and musical theatre. Co-founders Kennedy and Wanda Waller, members of McDonogh’s and Roland Park Country School’s faculties, are considering among others, two musicals for the upcoming season: Hairspray or Little Shop of Horrors.

Those accepted into the company will receive practical on-stage experience as well as workshop opportunities in auditioning, theatre games, improv, monologue development, dance, vocal music, and acting during this five-week camp. Evening and daytime performances will be open to the public. A maximum of 40 students will be cast. The finale to the camp season includes a trip to Toby’s Dinner Theatre to see their current production.

Young FilmMakers Camp

Ages: Boys and Girls 10 to 14

In its eighth sold-out season, Young Filmmaker’s Camp focuses on scripting, filming, and editing imaginative and often hilarious films using IMovie. Under the direction of seasoned teachers Nancy McFadden, Cara Costantini and Will Detwiler, campers work in groups to create movie trailers, music videos, commercials, and a final film on DVD. The session also includes Adobe Photoshop, Pivot animation, crazy film clips, “acting school,” and active outdoor and indoor games. Often our campers come back for two to five years and some even return as counselors.

All materials and equipment will be supplied by the camp. At the end of the session, all campers will go home with an exciting and often hilarious DVD of their creations.


Visual Arts Camp

Ages: Boys and Girls 9 to 13
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (M-F)

This camp will help individuals unleash their creativity and imagination through the discovery of well known artists and various techniques. Under the direction of experienced artist and art educator Gigi Lepski, campers will draw, paint, and sculpt with an array of traditional and nontraditional methods and materials to create unbelievably unique pieces of art. The group will also visit two of Baltimore’s top museums to learn about past and present artistic innovators. Lepski worked for many years as a production artist for television, stage, and special events before becoming an art educator. With training from MICA and Towson University, she is certified to teach K-12 art classes.


Advanced Arts Techniques - Drawing

Ages: Boys and Girls 9 to 14

This intensive one week workshop is for young artists of all levels who are interested in expanding their abilities in sketching, drawing, and image manipulation. Experienced artist and art educator Gigi Lepski will help campers learn how to draw complex images, by focusing them on the images they see rather than what they perceive. They will create complex forms by breaking them down into simple shapes and forms and then use learned techniques for drawing lines, texture and shading to create works of art with assorted materials. Campers will explore various media such as pencil, graphite, charcoal, color pencil, pen and ink, and oil pastel.


Advanced Arts Techniques - Painting

Ages: Boys and Girls 9 to 14
Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (M-F)

This week can be taken alone or in conjunction with the Advanced Drawing. During this time we will concentrate on painting techniques. This exploration will also encompass the experimentation of standard and unique materials used to apply assorted painting media to produce a variety of effects, and textures to create shading, form and self-expression. We will also be exploring color theory and how the use of different combination of color along with tints and shading affect the overall final painting. During this week we will create figurative as well as non-figurative expressions of art. We will be working water soluble graphite and color pencils, tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paint.


Circus Camp Stars!

Ages: Boys and Girls 7 to 15

This program is for kids who want to have a blast while experiencing the wonders of circus. As campers learn juggling and other circus arts, they will discover that with practice and a positive attitude they can learn almost anything. Tight wire, stilts, acrobatics, rolo bolo, unicycling, spinning plates, and physical comedy (clowning) are just some of the areas of focus. Other highlights include Pie in the Face Day and the Big Camper Show for friends and parents on Friday. Improvements in hand-eye coordination, balance, and self-confidence are just some of the benefits. Kids will be divided by ages and abilities, and safety is emphasized in all activities.

The camp is directed by Michael Rosman, a graduate of Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus Clown College, and a veteran of many circus performances in both traditional American and Cirque-style shows. Rosman and his coaches have more than 20 years of experience teaching circus skills.


Rock Shop Camp

Ages: Boys and Girls 9 to 15

So you want to be a rock and roll star? Or perhaps you want to learn a new instrument or play in a real rock band rather than imagining yourself in one while playing a video game. The McDonogh Rock Shop camp is designed to help aspiring musicians participate in all facets of the musical experience ranging from instrument instruction and performance to composition and studio recording.

The camp is led by McDonogh teachers and musicians Steve Martel and Don New who will draw from their musical lives and expertise to pass on skills and techniques that will help advance the musical know-how and imagination of all camp participants.

The Rock Shop camp is open to musicians of all levels of playing experience. Activities include: daily instrument instruction, band practices, camp performances, composing original songs, listening to guest performers, and recording in a camp studio. Campers will also participate in a daily outdoor activity such as swimming, field play, rock wall climbing, and a nature trek. Each participant will receive a broadcast quality camp CD that includes all studio and live performances.
