The McDonogh Forever Campaign

Site Improvements

Woods Road

No one ever forgets his or her first time traveling up the main drive, Shell Road. The natural beauty and open space are breathtaking, particularly in contrast to the surrounding suburban sprawl. And in contrast to the school's most used entrance, Woods Road.

Neither scenic nor well-configured, Woods Road leads to campus parking lots, the bus loop, student pick-up and drop-off spots, and event sites such as the Ceres M. Horn Theatre, Lamborn Hall, and the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center.

The Campus Master Plan calls for improvements to both the road and its surroundings. The reconfigured Woods Road will feature convenient, attractive entrances to the new St. John Student Center and the Naylor Building. Designated green spaces will improve vistas. A traffic light will be installed at Woods and McDonogh roads for added safety.

The end result will be a corridor that is welcoming, practical, and efficient for traffic.

Utilities

The heat for McDonogh buildings comes from a 1937 Titusville boiler, the oldest in the state of Maryland. The inefficient boiler will be replaced by a new utility plant. Initially powered by natural gas, the new system will be fitted for conversion to greener technologies as they become available.

The plant will be located behind the current bus maintenance shop on Woods Road.

Parking

Today’s Woods Road vistas include vast expanses of asphalt, which will be replaced by new buildings and green spaces. Parking lots will be relocated near the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, providing better access to the fields as well as improved traffic flow. There will be a net gain of 50 parking places.
