Expressing Hopes and Dreams in Art

Renowned artist Joyce Scott inspired lower, middle and upper schoolers to make Nkisi (Congolese for "spirit" or "power figure") to express their hopes and dreams. Using wood, beads, shells, fabric, and other media, Scott and the students spread out in the Horn Theatre lobby on October 21. Their nkisi took different forms, including pouches, figures, and ornaments. Completed Nkisi were tacked to a log from campus, which will remain on display in the lobby of Horn Theatre with hope that the young artists' wishes will be realized.
