Cultural Literacy Workshop

Cultural understanding builds trust and makes a diverse community healthy. That's what 35 freshmen and sophomores learned during an October 15 workshop led by four older students, all of whom were inspired by lessons they had learned at the 2009 National People of Color Conference. Using the eight cultural identifiers of race, gender, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation, age and religion as their guide, participants had the opportunity to learn vocabulary to become culturally literate, to hone their listening skills, and to hear awe-inspiring personal stories from workshop leaders. A freshman called the daylong event "a life-changing experience that will change the way we look at the world."
